The Serco Yamaha Metal Mulisha duo of Kirk Gibbs and Luke Style kicked off their 2012 MX Nationals campaign in fine style taking a 1-3 result respectively in the MX2 class at the opening round of the championship held at Green Park Conondale.

Gibbs entered the championship opener under an injury cloud after he sustained a damaged wrist at a race in Victoria a fortnight ago. A mid-week hit out didn’t provide the reassurance Gibbs was looking for so the plan of attack on race day was to score some points and salvage what he could from the round.

With the help of the on track Race Safe team, he was not only able to compete, Gibbs exceeding all expectations winning the round on his YZ250F with 2-5-1 results in the three points paying races, one point clear of Ford Dale in second. It was a huge effort on the South Australian’s behalf as the high speed, rough and rugged Conondale track is punishing on riders and machines.

“My plan today was nothing more to land inside the top five every race and ensure I didn’t damage my wrist any more so to win today is amazing,” Gibbs said from the top of the podium. “The bike worked perfectly all day and with myself and Luke both on the podium it shows how hard everyone at Serco has been working.”

Serco Yamaha Metal Mulisha

Luke Styke carded one of his best MX Nationals performance with a rock solid third place overall for the round. Styke was a front runner in all three motos and finished with 5-2-3 results in an impressive display.

Styke was able to out muscle and out ride some of his more fancied rivals and has now announced himself as a serious contender for the MX2 class in 2012.

“Third is a good result and I’m happy with it, but I still see a few things to work on. I need to pass riders faster and not get stuck behind them. I also need to be more aggressive on the opening lap and work hard to keep myself in contention early in the race. But, all up I will take third and try and improve on it at the next round,” Styke offers.

Team owner Gavin Eales was on hand to watch his riders turn in an eye catching performance and was full of praise at the end of the day.

“The pleasing thing from my end is that the team and the riders were solid right across the board. Both guys got pretty good starts, showed good speed and plenty of race fitness. Our bikes also looked to be working well and it was a real team effort and something that we really aimed for early in the season,” Eales said.

The MX Nationals now heads for Coonabarabran in New South Wales for round two on April 14/ 15. The Serco Yamaha Metal Mulisha Racing Team will be looking for a repeat performance of the opening round and keep the momentum flowing.

Star Valli Rockstar Metal Mulisha SX Houston Supercross

In Supercross Lites, Star Valli Yamaha’s Kyle Cunningham returned to racing after missing last week’s event due to injury. Cunningham had a strong showing in his heat race and finished an impressive fourth. In the main event, he got caught up in a turn-one pile-up, but still managed to work his way through the field to finish ninth.

Star Valli Rockstar Metal Mulisha SX Houston Supercross

I was riding pretty good,” said Cunningham. “I felt like we made progress from practice to the heat race. Then I got in the first-turn pile-up in the main and had to come from way back to ninth. We’ve just had some bad luck. I’ve ended up on the ground by myself and with other people, but that’s how it goes. We’ll try to come back strong and do something good for New Orleans.

Star Valli Yamaha teammate Kyle Peters continues to progress and improve as his rookie season plays out. Peters was right there with Cunningham in his heat race and followed his teammate home in fifth. In the main event, Peters turned in consistent laps before fatigue set in and he finished 11th.

I got a good start and rode decent for a few laps,” said Peters. “But then I got pumped up and that was about it for me. But we finished the race and that’s something to build on, for sure. Now we’ll just get ready for New Orleans and see if we can improve there.

In the Supercross class, Star Valli Yamaha’s Bobby Kiniry enjoyed his best result of the season. Kiniry finished a solid eighth in his eight-lap heat race and then gave it his all in the 20-lap main. Getting a great start, Kiniry was third off the gate and ran in the top five for the first few laps before bringing home a well-deserved sixth place.

I’m just pumped,” said Kiniry. “This is my best result this year and I feel like we’re building consistently now. I rode smart, I got a good start and I got the Rockstar Yamaha out in front of the pack, right off the bat. Now, I’m really looking forward to New Orleans. I’ve raced there once or twice, and I’m comfortable down there. We’re getting the ball rolling now and I know where I belong, and that’s up front, and I think I’m showing that now.

Star Valli Yamaha teammate Nico Izzi continues to contest the Supercross class on the East Coast, though officially he’s campaigning West Coast Supercross Lites. In the Supercross class at Houston, Izzi had a remarkable heat race and battled for a podium spot for most of the race before finishing fourth. In the main, Izzi put in a smart ride and turned consistent laps to finish eighth.

It was a good day,” said Izzi. “We had good practice times and a good heat. In the main, I had a good pace on those first 10 laps but then I got a little tired and I backed it down. But I’m pumped to be in the top 10 again, and the team rode well and everybody took a step forward. Now, I’m looking forward to racing Supercross in New Orleans, and then getting back to the Lites class.

Once again racing the Supercross class under the Star Valli Yamaha banner was Weston Peick, who finished an impressive sixth in his heat race. Peick went on to card a top-10 finish in the main event, thanks to a ninth-place result.

Star Valli Rockstar Metal Mulisha SX Houston Supercross

It’s good to be back with the Star Valli Yamaha team,” said Peick. “The heat race came around, and I got a decent start and finished sixth and that felt good. In the main, I was off to a good start, but about halfway through I started riding a little tight. I got a little tired but I finished a solid ninth, so it was a pretty good night. I’ve never raced at New Orleans before, so I think it’ll be pretty cool to race someplace new.

Last weekend was busy for the Metal Mulisha! The Star-Valli Rockstar Yamaha Metal Mulisha team prepped the bikes for the 2012 Monster Energy Supercross held at Atlanta’s, Georgia Dome. Check out the video below for the full track layout.

Two weeks ago during the Supercross Lite’s event held in Texas, Kyle Cunningham was looking toward a promising night of racing, running solid times and making clean passes. Unfortunately his night ended early after crashing in the first turn of the main event. Cunningham is back in the game and has been looking strong out on the track ready to take on a night of Supercross Lites racing. Check out Cunningham in this GOPRO video as he attempts to find the fastest line at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta during qualifying at the 8th round of the 2012 Monster Energy Supercross.

Cunningham finished up qualifying in 5th place and during his Heat race Kyle went to work, moving his way up to the front, and placing his number on the pole with an impressive 3rd place finish! In the main event, Cunningham pushed hard into the battle still with his injured wrist finishing off with a well deserved 7th place finish.

The track was fun, I just wish I was 100 percent healthy. Things were going really good until I crashed in last week’s main, and then my wrist started hurting so I had to do what was best to finish the race. Now I’m looking forward to St. Louis. It’s been awhile since I’ve been there and the track is pretty fun.” – Kyle Cunningham.

In the Supercross Class, Star Valli Yamaha’s Bobby Kiniry continues to sub for injured Ryan Morais. Bobby Kiniry Metal Mulisha Supercross Star Valli Rockstar Yamaha Kyle Partridge and Kiniry had a battle toward the finish line, dicing in mid-air for the lead as Kiniry finished up the LCQ in 2nd place and finished the night taking 14th in the main event. “Luckily I’ve been pretty good at those LCQ’s lately. I got myself into the main and I rode 20 solid laps. I came from last place and put in some consistent lap times and got up to 14th. I was catching that group in front of me but I ran out of time. My goal is to get up into the top 10 and I’m working toward that. I’ve always had good luck in St. Louis, so I’m looking forward to next weekend.” – Bobby Kiniry

Austin Stroupe remains out after breaking his collar bone at the recent Dallas Supercross, but hopes to return in several weeks. Teammate Nico Izzi has surgery on his injured wrist scheduled soon and hopes to race the Daytona Beach, FL, round in two weeks and Kyle Peters is still out due to injury, but hopes to be back next weekend. The next event for the team is the ninth round of the 2012 AMA/FIM Supercross Championship on Saturday, March 3rd, at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, MO.

The Star Valli Yamaha Rockstar Metal Mulisha team was keeping busy at San Diego’s Qualcom Stadium for another night of Monster Energy Supercross! The team prepped the bikes, and stayed focused hoping that the 20 percent chance of rain could just possibly hold off. To kill some time, we stormed up our own pit party in the stadium parking lot all day long, giving away free team gear, stickers, food, drinks, you name it.

Nico Izzi and Garth Swanepoel geared up and moved onto the track, both looking really fast and confident for the nights race. Check out the GOPRO practice lap videos from Izzi and Swanepoel…

In the San Diego SX Lites Heat 1, Swanepoel kicked it off with a great start and powered through the whoop section while running in fourth place before Jason Anderson found his way around Swanepoel as he finished fifth.

In the SX Lites Heat 2, Izzi managed to push through the first turn pile up unscathed, while putting up a solid fight, picking others off, and placing himself into a sixth place finish!

It was time for the SX Lites Main event. Izzi and Swanepoel work their way through the pack, picking others off while Swanepoel was behind Tomac trying to make his move. Then through the whoops, Tomac’s front end dropped down, sending him over the bars and too the ground on lap eight.

Nico Izzi

Both Izzi and Swanepoel blasted their way through the first triple, down the whoop section, and finished the race with Swanepoel in fourth and Izzi in fifth! This puts Nico in the top 5 for the West Lites Championship as he will be stepping up in the 450 class next weekend in Texas. Congrats to you both for a solid weekend of racing!

In the 250 Lites Qualifier, Nico Izzi and Ryan Sipes were both on top, with Nico finishing 1st and Sipes in 2nd.

During the 250 Lites Heat 1, Sipes moved into 2nd place on his 3rd lap and was looking really good out on the track! Sipes was chasing down Wilson, but ran out of time finishing in 2nd place.

In the 250 Lites Heat 2, Izzi pulled away from the pack with Musquin and Tomac right in front of him while Izzi held off Seely holding his 3rd place position. On the last lap, Seely moved in on Izzi, pushing him into 4th place as they crossed the finish line.

We hope and wish for a fast recovery for Austin Stroupe and Ryan Morais who both went down during previous races. Stroupe crashed hard enough in Phoenix, that he knocked himself out, and although his condition has been steadily improving, he did not race in Oakland or this weekend at A2. Ryan Morais will be back on the bike in time for the 2012 outdoor season. He suffered a broken jaw, several fractured vertebrae, collapsed lung, concussion and broken ribs. It is a amazing recovery for both these riders and we cannot wait to see you back on two wheels!

Supercross

Round two of the 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series took place at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona. The Star Valli/Yamaha/Metal Mulisha Racing team arrived, ready to take on the technical track and continue the racing battle with a huge crowd of 49,236 fans!

Supercross

In the Supercross class Austin Stroupe put up a decent time out of the 56 qualifiers pushing his way into his first heat. Stroupe went down really hard during Heat 1, knocking himself out while medical officials unfortunately did not clear him to ride the remainder of the round two.

Austin Stroupe

In the 250 West ‘quals’, Star Valli/Yamaha/Metal Mulisha Racing teammate Nico Izzi unfortunately came up short in practice on a triple and was coughing up blood.

Nicco Izzi

Nicco Izzi

He was taken to the hospital and was cleared to race. Arriving back to the stadium he ran from the car to the pits and made it just in time for the heat races taking 4th place. Ryan Sipes also put in a good qualifying time, but was caught up in a few corners holding him back during Heat 1. Sipes was then put into the LCQ while having a great start fighting for 3rd and 4th. Sipes pushed his way into 2nd and on the last lap, Moss took him out pushing him off track completely.

Ryan Morais

Ryan Morais

Ryan Morais had a good run at qualifying, but during his Heat 1 race another rider got hung-up in the corner, while their leg got stuck in Morais’s rear wheel. This held up Morais completely while pushing him back into the LCQ as he did not advance into the main.

Ryan Morais

Nico shook off his crash from earlier in the day and went into the main with his teammate Swanepoel ready for a fresh start. Nico and Swanepoel gunned it out of the gate while battling their way through the pack. Swanepoel has some mechanical issues and was pushed back while Nico held it together and crossed the checkered flag with a 9th place finish.
