The confrontation between Melendez, a Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu stylist who re-upped with STRIKEFORCE in February, and Kawajiri, a former Shooto welterweight champion, will be a rematch of a fight that Melendez won on a close, unanimous decision on Dec. 31, 2006.
The 5-foot-9 Melendez will be making his first start since scoring a lopsided five-round decision over Aoki on April 17, 2010, in Nashville, Tenn., on SHOWTIME. Melendez has been triumphant in his last four starts, including a unanimous decision over Thomson in a rematch to regain the title on Dec. 19, 2009.
“My hand is healed and I’m 100 percent ready,’’ said Melendez, a highly decorated wrestler and Pride Bushido star who turns 29 on April 12. “I want to prove I’m the No. 1 fighter at 155 in the world. Kawajiri is one of the best anywhere. This is going to be a hard, excellent fight and I am looking forward to it. I don’t want to leave any doubt this time around. I’m ready to rip.’’

This has been a little over four years since the two most talented 135 pound fighters have faced each other in the octagon. Metal Mulisha MMA UFC Bantamweight World Champion, Dominick Cruz is more than ready to battle is out and take on Faber in this highly anticipated fight. Cruz hasn’t lost a fight since. He has reeled off eight straight victories, twice defending his bantamweight title, once in the WEC and once in the UFC. The two fighters have built something of a rivalry in recent months. But Cruz said the grudge goes back to that first fight – and more specifically, over a official MMA event poster.

“In the beginning it had nothing to do with him at all. In the very beginning, it had to do with the fact that I wasn’t even on the event poster and I was fighting him for a world title. That really got under my skin. So, my way of getting on the poster was to sign where I signed (over Faber’s picture), and it ended up pissing him off. Since then, he’s been the one calling me out. He’s done a million YouTube videos, went on like a media frenzy, and just done a bunch of YouTube videos running his mouth. After that, that’s when everything started up. That’s when I started talking because I’m not just going to let him keep running his mouth about me for no reason“.
