Justin Homan is a true O.G. of Freestyle Motocross that has planted his roots in the sport from the beginning. He has won several FMX competitions in 2006, is the 2005 Asian X-Games Champion, and is the 2004 Thailand X-Games Bronze Medalist. For seven straight years, Homan competed in Summer X, Winter X and Gravity Games, making it to the finals every time and has bragging rights on being the eighth athlete in the world to complete a backflip in competition. Check out what has been going on with Homan lately…

M/M: Homan, what have you been up to these days ?
JHoman: Winter time in the Pacific North West. Trying to take a couple months off and get gnarly in the Snow Parks at Mt. Bachelor. Only to get signed on to the Monster X tour for Jan, Feb and March. Just got back from India which was crazy because I rode a 1999 CR250…
M/M: What!?…
JHoman: Yep, it was almost older than Freestyle itself! I’ll get to that story in a bit…
M/M: What kind of bike are you riding now?
JHoman: CRF450 since November 2010, had to have a Honda. Gave up two free Kawi’s and opted for a good deal on a couple CRF’s.
M/M: Any new additions or mods on the bike?
JHoman: The Honda CRF450 is sick 95% stock so the other 5% is the FMF pipe. Not like it needs any more power… just stick to the basics, suspension, gearing and bars.

M/M: Do you have any new tricks ( or a favorite trick ) that you would like to reveal?
JHoman: 2011 was a “relearn” year transferring from the CR to CRF. But after a couple months most of my tricks were better than ever. Double Grab Lookback’s, One Handed Grab Lookback’s, KOD’s, Turndown’s, and of course bringing back the O.G.’ness my signature Holyman trick came back!
M/M: So you said you just got back from India… how was that experience?
JHoman: The third world nations are always fun and traumatizing.
Everyone drives like it’s an AMA Outdoor National… pedal bikes, mopeds, motorcycles, Tuk Tuks, cars, and trucks all pinned for the holeshot. But I was actually over there for a Christian Evangelist Festival Concert that had a mixture of BMX, FMX, and live music bringing the sound waves to thousands of Indians.
M/M: Any interesting happen on the trip or a memory you would like to share from the trip?
JHoman: The Indians were going nuts! Everytime I high fived the the crowd they smashed the fencing and swarmed the riding area.
At one point I was jumping a swarming mass of people underneath the gap…. only in India! That OG 1999 CR250 I was talking about earlier had a Yamaha front fender, blown base gasket, and horribly soft suspension. It didn’t matter I had to make it happen and ended up throwing down on what most wouldn’t even ride down the street. Looking back now… it was a joke, but the real deal haha.
M/M: You have been involved with the Mulisha for years now from the small core group to a continuing dominating core enterprise. What has it been like watching Metal Mulisha take off and become the level it is today?
JHoman: Mostly, I’m just proud. It was a risk to be in FMX and in being involved in the Mulisha back in the day. All the racing sponsors, which we all had, frowned on it and people made fun of the Mulisha early on because they never thought it was going to take off. And have the tables turned hahaha! Now I just laugh every time one of the boys wins a medal just about every year, and Deegan is on TV winning something just about weekly it seems like. All those “bros” who tried to clown, gotta be hating it now, as the MM is in their face daily. I’m just glad athletes with the core mentality have had the opportunity to make a career our of something they love, and be recognized.
M/M: How did you like watching the new Metal Mulisha movie, Black Friday?
JHoman: Just watch it tonight as I got them in the mail yesterday. I told my wife it’s half gnarly and half sad. It’s tough to see such close friend as Lusk, Ox, and Bear being so alive with us and now just taken away. The movie is to true to the game, and illustrates how real our sport it. It defines what FMX and actions sports are and shows the world how bad ass the Metal Mulisha really is!
M/M: Who’s part did you like the most or what is the most intense part of the film to you?
JHoman: Potter just makes me laugh! Stoked he’s working on my trick the Holygrab, even though it’s 11 year later. Happy to see Garland and Agee bringing it on because, I remember when they were just pups. Anyways the whole film was awesome and it has to be Deegan boxing Mirra. He illustrates what it takes to be a true champion. Discipline, training, practice, work ethics, will, belief, and more then some more practice. He’s a great role model for who and what the MM is.
M/M: So what is coming up next… Any shows, demos, tours?
JHoman: I keep thinking it’s over and may retire, but each year my program is growing and I’m riding better than ever. 2012 brings Monster X Tour, Rockstar MM Tour Events, 40 West Coast/PNW/Canadian event dates, Haiti and Italy, just to start. Oh yeah I work a 40 hr a week day job as a GM/Accountant… Ha how does that make sense?!?!?!
