Strikeforce: Destruction took place last Friday at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA. Bobby Southworth took on the challenger, Mulisha’s own, Renato “Babalu” Sobral for the light heavy-weight championship belt. It was a scheduled 5 minute, 5 round fight and the main event of the evening. As both fighters stared each other down in the ring, Big John McCarthy signals for the bell and round one is under way. Without hesitation, both fighters come out with a vengeance. Babalu starts to throw some punches and takes Southworth to the cage. With both fighters in the clinch it goes to the ground where Babalu, a Black Belt in Ju-Jitsu, dominates. There are some blows exchanged, guards are held, submissions are tried but none stick. Big John steps in and stands the fighters up. Babalu takes advantage of this and once again takes Southworth to the cage with a clinch. Punches are exchanged, then Babalu lands a HUGE elbow to the eyebrow of Southworth. Blood instantly starts to gush out and the the ref calls a timeout to bring the Medic in. The Medic gives the OK to finish up the round, and Babalu lands a few more blows to face, at this point, Southworth’s face is gushing blood, he cant see and can barely breathe. The 1st round ends, both fighters go to their corners. Big John announces that the fight has come to a stop due to cut stoppage (in other words, Babalu cut him so bad they couldn’t stop the bleeding) and winner by TKO is Babalu…the new STRIKEFORCE LIGHT HEAVY-WEIGHT CHAMPION! Congrats Babalu!
